Verizon Wireless Cuts EV-DO Prices by 25%
Verizon Wireless said it plans to cut prices for its EV-DO laptop data service, BroadbandAccess, by 25 percent from $79.99 per month to $59.99 per month. Spokespeople said the price cut was something the carrier had been planning for months and was not prompted by competition. Rival Sprint recently launched a competing EV-DO wireless data service for laptops. In addition to the price cut, Verizon Wireless expanded its network to a number of new markets, including Sacramento and San Francisco, California; Denver; Louisville, Kentucky; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina. Some industry insiders see Verizon's price cut as the possible start of a wireless broadband price war. It is not clear yet if any of Verizon Wireless' rivals, especially Cingular Wireless or Sprint, will cut the price of their wide area laptop data offerings.
